A Fall Surprise

No, this isn't THE surprise but I must admit I was a little surprised to find this guy underneath Ziggy's food bowl today.  He was in a coccoon of some sort.  I suspect he will become a moth someday?  If so, probably a large one as he was rather plump.
I am closing comments now so I can choose a winner - thanks to all who commented!
THE surprise is a little giveaway I have put together in honor of my blog anniversary (Sept 26th marked 5 years of blogging), having over 130 followers (I am amazed that many of you stop by to read my ramblings), and to celebrate fall.

I am offering Just Nan's Hootzi Humbug chart from last year brand new with embellishments, a blackbird pincushion hand made by little ole me, and a fabric thread catcher.  I tried my best to get a good picture of the blackbird but the lighting and black fabric just didn't want to play well together.

Now, what do you need to do to win?  Just leave me a comment on this post telling me about one of your favorite fall traditions.  I know one of my favorite things to do in the fall is to visit the apple orchard - fresh apples, apple cider, and homemade baked goods just scream fall to me.  If you don't really have something you enjoy every fall just tell me your favorite color and we'll be good to go!  I ask that you do not advertise this giveaway as this is my way of saying thank you to those who stop by my blog on at least a semi-regular basis.

I will have the random number thingy choose a winner to be announced next Sunday, October 16th.  In the event one of my non-cross stiching blog friends is the winner I will happily substitute the cross stitch chart with a few fallish fat quarters from my stash and draw a second winner for the chart only.

Good luck!  I am looking forward to hearing the things you and your family enjoy during the fall season.  I really appreciate each and every one of you who stop by to visit.

My favorite thing is to be able to go to my favorite beach in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, now that the tourists are gone! I grew up in SF, four blocks from the beach, and here I am on the opposite coast, near the beach again! It is in my blood! I would be interested in knowing how to make the thread catcher-thingy! Too cute! Hugs!

I love your all of your work . I just saw your thread catcher on Fayes blog and I said I would love one of those! My favorite fall tradition is baking a big fat juicy apple pie. I used to live in Massachusetts and the apples are much better than the ones I get in Florida now. Thanks for a fun giveaway, Beth N. (stormybrew57@aol.com)

Congratulations! Five years is GREAT! My favorite thing about fall is Thankgiving. I love to cook the food and have my family and friends around just to enjoy the day!

Congratulations! :)

Fall rituals, traditions .... Seeing the yellow pencils appear in the stores to remind us that it's back-to-school time just makes me feel so happy. :) But my favorite new tradition is gathering the late windfall apples from our property (and anywhere else!) and bringing them to the animals. Oh, the joy!! Honking geese, quacking ducks, clucking chickens, bleating goats - everyone so happy and so excited! I love it. :)

Happy blogiversary! I love everything about fall! A tradition would be to have an Autumn tea party with our family on the first day of Autumn!

Wow five years and 130 followers. Congrats. I have two things I love about fall. School supply shopping. My nieces are grown so now I am helping out a charity by buying supplies for a child. This year it was a 6 year old boy. The little pants and shirt were so cute and of course the paper, crayons, rulers, and glue warmed my heart. The second thing I love to do is get out my Halloween needlework items. I have made several necklaces and can't wait to wear them. This year I started wearing them at the end of September. The thread catcher is so adorable. You are very talented. Marty

Happy Blogieversary! Five years is quite the accomplishment. My favorite fall tradition is putting the flannel sheets on my bed. They make it all the more snuggly and warm. I just love it.

Happy Blogiversary!!!

One of my favorite Fall traditions is visiting Hurley Farms, which is a local farm owned by some of the hardest working people I know, picking out pumpkins of course, getting lost in the corn maze and sipping warm Apple cider.

Mindi said...

Happy Blogaversary! I don't really have a favorite tradition, just a lot of small things that mean fall to me. I love finally being able to open the windows at night, putting flannel sheets on the bed, drinking hot tea or cocoa during the day, and seeing the leaves change. Fall is also the time for hot apple crisp, finally getting fresh cranberries, and I get to make my favorite cranberry-pumpkin bread. So many other things too. Oh, how could I forget, snuggling up with my blanky!

Happy Blogoversary! Oh, how I'd love to win this fabulous giveaway, especially the bird and thread catcher made by you! My favorite tradition for fall is making my absolute favorite cookie, a pumpkin, chocolate chip, oatmeal creation that I can't stop eating - thus, only made once a year, lol.

I just did one of my favorite fall things yesterday. We went to the cranberry festival. They had great crafts and everything cranberry. So much fun. Made a cranberry apple crisp from produce that I bought home. Love the little bird and really love the thread catcher. Happy 5th blogoversary! Thanks for having a wonderful giveaway.

What an interesting caterpiller...it looks pumpkin-ish!

I'd love a chance at your giveaway. The blackbird and ort container are darling. I am a pumpkin fiend and bake pumpkin everything all fall. I love going to the Pumpkin festival (next weekend!) and getting pumpkined out. This year, I am hoping to splurge on a glass blown pumpkin that's sold at the fair. :)
Congrats on your blogiversary!

What i love about Autumn is going for walks with my dog Poppy and DH seeing all the wonderful things nature brings us, the colour of the trees and looking for nuts and berries for displays, and yes kicking up those beautiful leaves and the smells.

What a sweet giveaway, Myra. and congrats on your blogoversary!

Can I tell you honestly that I try to close my eyes and will away autumn? Or at least let it pass unnoticed? Why, you ask? Because my birthday is in autumn and I can not get over how fast the years are flying by!! Don't get me wrong, I love fall colors, pumpkins, Thanksgiving, but the rest is bah humbug!

Lois said...

Happy 5th anniversary Myra! I love coming by your blog and seeing what you've been up too. Would love to be entered in your giveaway. No special traditions for me but I do love to see the leaves changing into their beautiful colours as October passes.

Ohhh, SO in love with that thread catcher!!! And the bird pincushion. I love handmade items. My favorite thing about fall is, well, everything: the cooler temps, the changing of the leaves, the smell of firewood in the air, sweaters, jeans, and boots making their comeback for another season, and sitting out back with my BF around our fire pit just enjoying the evening.

Happy Anniversary Myra!

We dont really have any Autumn (as us Aussie's call it) traditions as such, but I love to watch the trees change colour, such beautiful tones of reds, oranges, browns.

Congratulations on five years, Myra! Isn't it strange to think that if you and I hadn't started blogging we never would have met each other? What a friendship we would have missed...

Your little thread catcher is such a great invention!! And the lovely matching bird is very sweet as well. I would love to enter your give away :) I don't really have a fall tradition, but I absolutely love the smells of autumn--the crisping leaves, cooler air, and the sweet apples ripening on the trees. They always remind me of a new school year (which I loved!)...

5 years!!! Wonder how long I have "known" you from the quilt forums too?? I also love going to the orchard, we always go up to Alta Pass on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I like to make my own applesauce with absolutely no added anything. Canned 14 jars this year. Love that bird!!!

Happy Blogoversary! 5 years, a lot of time... :o) I would like to participate in your little giveaway, so: we are usually making a Halloween party where my whole family comes in costumes... For the feast, we are preparing typical autumnal food, pumpkin soup for instance. It is not very typical in Germany to make a Halloween party, and only a few kids are ringing the bell for some sweets! :o/ Wish it would be more popular! ;o)

Happy blogiversary!! Hmmm, we don't have any specific traditions for Fall, but I adore any and all food around this time that contains pumpkin...we just had some pumpkin pie cupcakes yesterday that were excellent! On a food-related note, I suppose it is a tradition now that I show up for Thanksgiving with my crystallized ginger cranberry sauce!! Mmmmm...crystallized ginger....

The blackbird is soooo cute!!

Thanks for the opportunity to enter your give-away.

Happy 5th Blogoversary!

Singapore is in the Tropics, no seasonal changes. However, I love Autumn, the coolness and the colors. Autumn colors are my favorite, shades of red, orange, brown, yellow and green.

And thank you for sharing your wonderful talent.

Congratulations! I've enjoyed reading your blog over the past year; you're so creative and inspiring!

My favorite autumn activity is putting my garden to bed for the year. While I love its splendor and glory during the spring and summer, I enjoy preparing it for the next year and finding ways to make it even more enjoyable.

My favorite Fall activity is to visit an antique grist mill turned cider mill. It is only a few miles from my home. The combination of fresh cold cider and hot fried doughnuts is unbeatable. The building is very old, barn red colored, and with a stream and water wheel to power the press. This just says Fall to me.

Happy Anniversary! :-) LOVE your bird & Ort Container - I have a few of those cut out for gifts myself! ;-)

Fall traditions? I guess it would be the Pals Fall Fling - getting together with a large group of stitching friends each October to stitch & have fun at the beach! This is year #14, so it's certainly a tradition now!!

Happy blogaversary! Besides dragging my box of fall decorations out of the closet and making sure every surface in the house has a pumpkin or black cat sitting on it, my favorite tradition is making apple pies and apple sauce using the apples from my tree (which produces a lot of apples so the kiddies get a pie at least every other week for most of the season).

Your work is gorgeous! Love it! My favorite thing to do in the fall is head north to Michigan for the color and apples! Yum!!

Happy Blogaversary!!

My favorite fall tradition is the visit to the pumpkin patch. When our kids were small it was a HUGE deal, but I still like it - all the beautiful colors of the pumpkins, gourds and mums. Definitely my favorite time of year.

Happy Blog-versary! I found your blog while reading about the Mystery Sampler. i have a couple of favorite fall traditions- one is college (mostly Big10) football and the other is just simply enjoying the weather - long walks, bicycle riding, color tours, baking fall treats (apple pie, acorn squash). Ok that is more than two- but i love fall, it's my favorite time of year.

Also love owls and the blackbird & thread catcher are both really cute. Thank you for offering such a great giveaway

Happy blogoversary, Myra! I'd love to be entered, that blackbird is so yummy! We don't really have any traditions...but my favorite thing to do in the fall is turn on the heater those first couple of times. Congrats Myra on your 5 year blogoversary, I've enjoyed seeing all your wonderful creations and you are the best with needle and thread that I have ever seen.
Autumn is just so heartwarming to me ~ the colours bring warmth, the festivities bring warmth and the early dark evenings with the fire on bring warmth!
Sorry, but I am a jelly when it comes to Halloween, I hate anything scary so all carved pumpkins in our house have very BIG smiles xxx
