Merry

I finished my "Merry & Bright" ornament and since Maureen said she was trying to put together a collection of stitched ornaments when she won my giveaway, I sent it off to her.  I chose a simple pillow finish with a pretty corded trim.

I finished this several weeks ago but since it was a gift I couldn't show it until now.
(Photo borrowed from Chris' blog because I am a dork and forgot to take a picture.)

I designed a little piece which incorporated her initial and made it into a pendant using a pocket watch case found in the scrapbooking section of Hobby Lobby.  I added a little pizzazz with a heart and key charm.  :o)

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  For those of you celebrating Thanksgiving this week, I wish you bounty and blessings and good times with family and friends.

Road Trip!

Today Chris and I headed down to Lone Star Merchantile for their Christmas open house.  We met a friend of Chris's there (Hi Susan!) and let the browsing and shopping commence.  They had lots of neat prim Christmas things, fabrics galore, and as always the staff was very helpful and friendly.  I dorked out and didn't take a single picture inside the shop.  They have several pictures posted on their blog which are much better than any I would have taken so head on over there and have a look.

I did manage to get this picture of Chris while we were there.  We were also having a belated birthday celebration since we were unable to meet up before her special day.
I didn't tell her but I want that orange shirt she's wearing.  :o)

Afterwards we had a wonderful lunch and I really enjoyed talking and laughing with Susan and Chris.  Time spent with like minded ladies is just priceless!

Wanna see my goodies?

Hand dyed wool, tarnished tinsel, rusty jingle bells, and several cuts of fabric made their way into my basket.

Even though we were celebrating Chris's birthday she gifted ME with this cute little Christmas kit.

Well, it has been a long day friends and since this came in the mail today...

I think I'll settle down for a bit of reading before I toddle off to bed.

I hope your Saturday was as wonderful as mine!

My Sampler Story

On April 21st of this year the Piedmont Heritage Sampler Guild held their 2nd meeting and the program was entitled "Carolina Girls".  Chris gave a presentation about samplers that were stitched in North and South Carolina and challenged us to find out more information about our town and investigate if there were academies for girls there long ago.

I have never been a history buff.  It was my least favorite class in school.  Perhaps it was due to the fact that the football coaches at my high school always taught history and most of the attention in class went to the pretty cheerleaders.  But, this had me intrigued.  Was there anything like that in my tiny little town or anywhere nearby?

After several hours of research I did find pictures online of a very few samplers from North Carolina.  I then decided that I needed to make sure that 100 years from now someone could find a sampler about North Carolina that was stitched by someone in North Carolina.  It became my mission.  So I went online to my usual haunts in search of a pattern.  I found a few, but none that were of a style that appealed to me and none that were really a traditional sampler.

Now, some of you know how I sometimes get a "bee in my bonnet" and nothing will suit me except to attempt to achieve whatever it is that I am passionate about at the time.  I am not an artist.  Most of my drawing is limited to stick figures or finding a coloring book page and working from there.  I am not a designer.  Although I have a pretty good sense of color and design, I don't consider design one of my strong points.  But, these things weren't going to deter me as that bee kept buzzing around my head and I just couldn't get rid of it.

I remembered a disc that I picked up from the clearance table at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago for $1.54 that had cross stitch motifs on it.  It was by Kooler Design Studio and had lots of cutesy summer motifs on it.

What really got my attention about this disc is that upper left corner.  See where it says "Includes Pattern Maker Starter Level"?  Well I remembered that I had this in a drawer somewhere and went off in search of it.  It was promptly loaded on my computer and off I went.

I knew that I wanted to include all of the usual North Carolina symbols such as our state flower, bird, tree, and motto but I also needed to include some of the traditional sampler motifs.  In addition, I wanted to include some things that were meaningful to me.  I also wanted to make sure it was a manageable size as I just can't stick with those big projects that take years to complete.  Neither did I want to spend a lot of money on supplies or on having it framed.

So after several hours on the computer learning how to use the design software and several months of stitching, here is my sampler.

"Miss Carolina"
designed by me!
36 ct Tree of Life Linen/DMC floss

She was designed to fit in a standard 8x10 frame and uses DMC floss.  I think she could have benefited from using overdyed floss in places such as the house and grass but again, I didn't want to add to the cost.  As you can see, I included my beloved cardinals, a dogwood border, pine trees, the NC flag, our NC motto, as well as some things that just have to be on a sampler in my opinion such as an alphabet, numbers, and a house.  For me, just because I like them, there is a dog and a cat, birdhouse, a key, and a crown.  I must say I am quite proud of my sampler and just thrilled that she is already hanging in a prominent place in my home.

So...100 years from now when someone like me decides to do some research (heaven help us if there is another like me), it is my hope they will find this sampler or a picture of it and know that needlework was alive and well in North Carolina in 2012.

P.S.  A thank you has to go out to Chris for putting this "bee in my bonnet".  :o)

A Winner!

I would like to welcome my 5 new followers.  I now have 205!   Thank you all for stopping by my little corner of the web.

I just have to show you this ribbon I found at Hobby Lobby today.

Isn't it fabulous!  Oh, and it was on sale too so I spent all of 2 quarters on it - so I bought 2 rolls.  LOL  It's the little things that make me smile.

Now without further ramblings from this peanut gallery, the winner is Maureen of Maureen's Mountain of Stitching.  Maureen I will be contacting you via email so we can decide what I should make for you.

I decided to choose a 2nd winner to receive a little surprise from me and that person is Kaye of Kitten Stitching.  Kaye, if you will please email me your snail mail address.

I wish I could send you all something.  Stay tuned, I plan to have a little Christmas themed giveaway in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy your Sunday and for those of you who do, don't forget to turn back your clocks tonight.

It's Friday!

Yipee!  I hope you all had a great week and have something fun planned for the weekend.  My thoughts and prayers remain with those affected by Sandy and I pray that recovery is fast.

I managed to complete a little stitching this week.

Then I saw Edgar's post about Erynne's SAL and you know I just had to stitch up this block right away.  :o)

My plans are to add some lace trim and finish this as a little pillow ornament.  I hope to spend some time at the sewing machine this weekend as I have some finishing to do on Christmas gifts.

Thank you for your wonderful comments on my previous post.  I appreciate each and every one of them.  You are all so encouraging and inspiring.

Don't forget...if you are a follower I am having a giveaway and will draw a name tomorrow.  You can find all the details here.
